The smallest pathogen there is

A viroid is built even more simply than a virus: a bare ring of RNA, a few hundred building blocks long, without a coat and without a single protein of its own. It can do nothing by itself – it makes the plant work for it.

The viroid in question is named after its first host: it was discovered in hops. And that's where it got its epithet – latent, hidden. In hops it usually stays entirely symptomless.

In cannabis it often does too. In the largest survey so far, over 80 per cent of infected plants in the vegetative stage were symptomless, and around three quarters in flower as well.

Four out of five infected plants look healthy. That settles any diagnosis by eye before it begins.

The scene's most expensive n = 1

One figure circulates everywhere on this viroid: 27.8 per cent THC in the healthy plant, 15.9 in the infected one. Almost half gone. It appears in articles, forums and sales copy. How did it come about?

The main route is the cutting

If a mother plant is infected, so are her cuttings – in trials up to one hundred per cent, detected in the roots of the rooted cuttings.

That's the uncomfortable consequence of what makes cloning attractive: you multiply a plant along with everything inside it. Anyone cutting from the same mother for years distributes an invisible finding to every single daughter.

A detail that costs money in practice: in the same trial one genotype was still negative on day eight and only turned positive on day twelve. Test too early and you get a clean result for an infected plant.

A false-negative test is worse than no test – because afterwards you stop looking.

"That doesn't come through in seed"

That's a widespread reassurance, and it has a good reason: in hops, seed transmission of this viroid was studied for decades. At most a few per cent were found – and one group even considered it impossible, because enzymes activate in the pollen that break down the viroid's RNA. Does that hold for hemp too?

What is not established

Where much money is involved, claims grow faster than findings. Three things you'll often read that are not established:

Aphids spread it. What is established is that aphids take up the viroid when feeding on infected plants. That they transmit it to healthy plants has not been shown. Uptake is not transmission – a detection inside the animal may be mere gut content.

The scissors transmit it. Very plausible, since transmission of infectious sap at cut surfaces is established. But the specific route tool-to-plant has never been run as an experiment. Interesting detail: merely rubbing leaves is not enough.

And the most honest sentence at the end: which other viruses and viroids exist in cannabis is barely researched. There could be more. There could also not be.

"Not established" doesn't mean "disproved". It means: right now nobody knows.

Hygiene that fits the pathogen

A viroid is not a bacterium and not a fungus. It has no cell wall, no membrane, no metabolism – and therefore none of the weak points that ordinary quick disinfection targets. A brief wipe with alcohol does little to it.

What follows is not a product but a routine:

Quarantine for anything new. Bought-in cuttings don't go straight to the others. You know this from the diagnosis course as the doorman principle – here it counts double, because you can't see anything on the newcomer.

Order of cutting. First the plants you trust, then the questionable ones. Whoever starts with the suspect one distributes it.

Change the blade instead of wiping it. When in doubt, a fresh tool is more honest than a quickly wiped one.

And don't share tools. Neither with the neighbour nor between rooms.

That costs nothing but attention – and it works against everything in this course, not just the viroid.

Route three: test

With the viroid there is no look. No pattern, no coating, no distribution – only a lab result.

That sounds expensive but needn't be, if you apply it in the right place:

One mother, one test. If a mother plant is clean, so are her cuttings. A test at the source covers a whole generation – far cheaper than individual tests on twenty daughters.

Don't test too early. A fresh cutting can test negative and still be infected. Wait until it has rooted.

Which tissue is best is disputed. One group recommends the root, because the viroid is unevenly distributed in foliage; another checked exactly that with a more sensitive method and got the opposite result – for them the false negatives were in the root. Both groups have ties to test providers. We therefore recommend neither here, only: not too early, and when in doubt several samples.

And there is no cure. Procedures exist that regenerate viroid-free plants from infected ones – but without guarantee and with very different success depending on genotype. The reliable route remains: test and discard.

This is what an honest number looks like

In Canada 15,947 samples were examined over three years, from nine provinces. 25.6 per cent were positive.

A large number, cleanly collected, published and peer-reviewed. And yet you need to know three things before using it:

They were submitted samples. Facilities sent them to a lab voluntarily. Those with a suspicion test – those without often don't. That shifts the result upward.

Samples were counted, not plants and not facilities. Ten samples from one room are ten data points.

And the three-year average describes no single year. In the first year it was almost 89 per cent – but that was effectively one province, right after the first detection there. In the second year 16, in the third under 15 per cent.

An honest number always comes with its context. Not because the context weakens it, but because without it the number claims something other than what was measured.

And this is what the other one looks like

The number you'll read far more often is a different one: 90 per cent of Californian facilities are affected, and the damage runs to four billion dollars a year.

Both come from the same press release. The sender is a nursery that sells HLVd tests and certified, tested clones.

What it actually says is narrower: it concerns sites among their own paying test customers where over three years at least one test came back positive. And the source itself writes "almost 90 per cent", not 90.

The four billion is an extrapolation from an unnamed market estimate and someone else's production forecast. No calculation is disclosed, and the arithmetic assumes an infected plant is a total loss – which the same industry doesn't claim elsewhere.

That doesn't automatically make the number wrong. It makes it unsupported and interest-driven. The difference matters: we don't know that it's less. We only know that nobody measured it.

How a sales figure becomes a fact

A press release is a press release. You can tell by the sender, and anyone can check. So how does that very number end up everywhere today, as if it had been measured?

The exception to the wipe test

The diagnosis course has a reliable trick: white coating on the leaf? Wipe test. Residues and trichomes wipe off and don't come back, powdery mildew does.

The test works because powdery mildew sits on the leaf. It's a surface dweller.

But there is a second mildew, and it does the exact opposite. Downy mildew grows inside the leaf tissue. On top you only see pale, later angular patches – angular because the tissue between the veins dies and the veins draw the boundary. The actual growth sits on the underside and only shows in moisture.

Wipe here and you're wiping the wrong side and get nothing – and might conclude it's just a residue.

Two qualifications belong with this. First: all documented cases concern outdoor hemp; we found no indoor case. What forums call "downy mildew" is almost always the powdery one. Second, and this is the neat point: downy mildew isn't a true fungus at all but an oomycete – the closest relative of what sat on the roots in the last lesson. The same type of organism, once below, once above.
